This is What I Know
Program Notes
In many ways This is What I Know is a personal journey in my own compositional style. It recalls the same
orchestration of my first serious composition, the piano quartet. The techniques of development and
transformation are inspired by previous teachers, especially Marty Rokeach. The harmonic language is
driven by the time I spent studying with Charles Argersinger and Robert Carl.
The rhythmic devices are the results of my time studying with Ryan Hare. The whole work has the memory of the many composers that have stirred reaction in me including, Brahms, Beethoven, Stravinsky, Lutoslawski,
and so many others. In many ways as a composer this is music is “what I know”.
