Sonata for Bassoon and Piano is dedicated to and commissioned by Ryan Hare, a champion of contemporary music as well as an outstanding composer himself. I have had the good fortune of being a student, colleague, and friend to him over our long-standing relationship.
This sonata is very much a study in dichotomy and similarity. The work uses a more modern type of chromatic saturation at the same time each movement recalls forms more common to the 18th century then the 21st century. It draws inspiration from Schoenberg and Mozart, and speaks to a personal language I have slowly begun to develop.
